Plot

The serene village of Rudravanam is rocked by rumours of black magic and the deaths of several people in the town when Venkata Chalapathy begins to be suspected of being responsible. The villagers fear and superstitious kill the couple. Chalapathy’s wife curses the village before she passes away saying that it will be destroyed in 12 years. They are blessed with a young child called Bhairava, who survives and goes to an orphanage. After 12 years, in 1991, Surya goes back to Rudravanam with his mother to donate land for a school and to participate in the festival being organised in the village.

While staying there, he falls in love with Nandini, daughter of the head of the village. But when a villager dies a mysterious death, the temple priest seals the village off for 8 days to stop an ancient curse from spreading, it throws the romance into disarray. As more villagers die in increasingly horrific ways, Surya starts to investigate the strange events. The help of a local doctor and an Aghora (ascetic), he is able to see that every victim sees someone else die prior to becoming the next victim, causing a chain of horrific supernatural deaths. Surya concludes that someone is wreaking revenge on the whole village through the use of witchcraft. The village wrongly accused Chalapathy of black magic and Surya finds out that he actually was performing Atharvana Veda rituals to heal his paralyzed wife instead.

Bhairava and Nandini are the true culprits behind the curse as they want to avenge the villagers for what they did to their family years ago. They control old rituals and supernatural powers to kill all those who are to blame. The final confrontation is climactic as Surya desperately attempts to come to his help and persuade Nandini to drop her quest for revenge. With confusion between her love for Surya and the need for justice, Nandini ultimately sacrifices herself to break the curse and save the villagers. As the supernatural threat is over, Surya calls upon residents of Rudravanam to put away their ignorance of the superstitious beliefs and make the abandoned house of Chalapathy a place for learning and a new beginning. The movie ends with a cryptic suggestion that there might be something else out there, supernatural, which is left open to interpretation.

Final Thought

Overall, Virupaksha is a captivating thriller that mixes mystery, horror, and suspense. The performances are strong, and the unexpected twists keep you hooked right up to the end.
