The Odyssey (2026) – Overview
The Odyssey is a 2026 English-language fantasy action film written and directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas and Nolan under their own company Syncopy, along with Universal Pictures. The movie stars Hollywood favourite Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who is trying to find his way back home after a long and brutal war. He gives a strong, tired-hero kind of performance in this large-scale mythology-based adventure. This movie features a massive cast, including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, along with many other well-known faces in smaller parts. The film follows Odysseus, a warrior-king who spends years trying to sail home to his wife and son after the fall of Troy, facing gods, monsters, storms and betrayal along the way, while his family waits and wonders if he is even still alive.

Awards and Nominations
The Odyssey opened in theaters on 17 July 2026 and quickly became one of the most talked-about films of the year because of Christopher Nolan’s name attached to it and the huge scale of the shoot. It holds a special place already for being the first film ever shot completely on IMAX 70mm cameras, and also the first time Homer’s ancient story has been brought to IMAX screens in this way. Since the film has just been released, no award nominations have come in yet, but early buzz around it has been very strong, with premieres held in London and New York drawing almost the entire main cast together, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o.
The film’s technical work has drawn a lot of attention too, especially the camera work by longtime Nolan collaborator Hoyte van Hoytema and the score by Ludwig Göransson, who has scored several of Nolan’s earlier films. Matt Damon’s casting as Odysseus is being seen as a milestone too, since this marks his third film working with Nolan after Interstellar and Oppenheimer. A surprising bit of casting also got people talking — rapper Travis Scott appears in the film, and Nolan has said he wanted to link the art of rap with old-style oral poetry, which is how stories like the Odyssey were first told and passed down.

Plot
The Odyssey is based on the old Greek poem by Homer, written somewhere between 750 and 650 B.C., and it tells the story of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and his hard ten-year journey home after the Trojan War finally ends. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, a proud and clever warrior who should have reached his home and family quickly, but instead gets pulled into one dangerous situation after another on his way back.
Along the way Odysseus encounters gods, strange islands, and beings who attempt to prevent him from making his way home and/or mislead him, such as the enchantress Circe, portrayed by Charlize Theron. Zendaya is playing the goddess Athena, who has always been a protector and guide for Odysseus, and attempts to do the same to him throughout his journey and struggles. Awaiting him for years at home in Ithaca, his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) suspects that her husband may be dead, while their son Telemachus (Tom Holland) is raised by his mother without his father’s presence, and must cope with men who try to exploit her and her kingdom, including a rival named Antinous (Robert Pattinson).
It is a combination of big action, myth and emotion that depicts the tribulations of a family when a man is gone for years during a war and what it costs a man to crawl his way back home to the people he loves. It isn’t just a war story, it’s also a story about patience, loyalty and how much you will do to keep your family and home safe.
