Company Overview

Story

The film is about a group of characters that follow a man named Malik, a powerful and calculating man in the Mumbai underworld, and a young man named Chandu, who joins his criminal organization and fairly earns his trust. A professional partnership builds into a close bond based on loyalty, ambition and mutual respect. As Malik’s organization grows Chandu moves upward and becomes a vital part of the organization. As they strengthen their power, however, so does the difference between their personalities, ambitions and leadership styles. Chandu starts to assert his own power, and Malik starts to become more wary about keeping his power. They used to be good friends, but it slowly evolves into a dangerous competition. But the police officer Srinivasan goes to work on the criminal network, trying to get its men in hand. In a tale of crime, politics, friendship, and betrayal, Company ultimately takes a look at the power of ambition and the desire to seize control and how it can ruin even the best of friendships.

Plot

The movie follows the life of the powerful underworld figure of Malik of Mumbai and Chandu, a young boy who joins Malik’s gang. Soon enough, Chandu earns the trust of Malik and they start creating a network of criminals. When they do well, their bond grows stronger, but when they are influential tensions mount between them. However, as Chandu becomes more ambitious and independent, their personalities and leadership styles start to clash, posing a threat to them. As police officer Srinivasan digs deeper into the organization, he attempts to expose their activities. A loyal and mutually respected relationship evolves into a deadly power struggle. This is a story of ambition and its impact on relationships and of the drive to exert control and the fallout that can end the best of friendships.

In all respects, Company (2002) is a compelling and thought provoking crime drama that continues to hold the audience’s attention in a realistic manner, with excellent performances and a very strong exploration of loyalty, ambition and betrayal. The performances of Ajay Devgn and Vivek Oberoi are noteworthy and the tense atmosphere of the film is created by Ram Gopal Varma’s restrained direction. Its long story line and more leisurely pacing could be a drawback for some, but the character-driven plot and the unique depiction of the underworld are worth the watch.
