Plot
Against a stylized and rough backdrop of the 1990s underworld in Mumbai, the plot revolves around Ustara, a cold-blooded and highly skilled contract killer who works in the high-ranking crime syndicates, yet in secret, has ties with intelligence agencies. A man of violence, loyalty and survival, Ustara has a life ruled by precision and ruthless efficiency in a world where there is no loyalty.
His journey takes a new twist as he meets a mysterious woman who is out to avenge the brutal murder of her husband. The two start their journey together because of a common purpose but as they maneuver through the maze of deceit, gang tensions, and political intrigues, they develop a tense relationship.
The limits between the duty and emotion start to blur as their mission unfolds. The long-repressed human side of Ustara is coming out, and the woman is torn between her desire to take revenge and her own increasing attraction towards him.
Their adventure reveals concealed facts about the underworld and the price to be paid by violence, and it plunges them into more and more risky circumstances in which trust is not so valuable. The story is slowly leading to a tragic climax, where love, revenge and destiny come together and both characters are forced to face the repercussions of their actions in a world where there is no redemption.
Final Word
O’Romeo is a dark and intense mixture of romance and crime, which is well supported by good performances, particularly by Shahid Kapoor. The story is enriched with depth and a poetic touch directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. The intricate storyline and slow-moving pace might not be liked by all viewers, but the film is an emotional outburst and stylishly shot, which is why it is a unique, yet controversial, addition to the modern Hindi film industry.
