DC (2026) – Overview

DC is a 2026 Tamil-language romantic action thriller movie written and directed by Arun Matheswaran and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. The movie stars Lokesh Kanagaraj in his acting debut as Devadas, a rugged outlaw who gets pulled into a violent world of revenge and romance. He delivers a surprisingly confident and intense performance in this stylish, blood-soaked gangster drama.

The film features a strong cast including Wamiqa Gabbi, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, Thalaivasal Vijay, Avinash Raghudevan and Kasthuri Raja, along with several other actors in supporting roles. The story follows Devadas, a man who lives by his own moral code, until two women — Parvathy, a bar singer, and Chandra, a brutalised sex worker — walk into his life and change everything.

Awards and Nominations

DC opened in theatres worldwide on 7 August 2026 after a slight delay caused by the massive release of Jana Nayagan. The film generated solid buzz right from the start, especially because it marked Lokesh Kanagaraj’s first appearance as a lead actor. The trailer had already turned heads when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026, and the advance bookings showed that fans were genuinely curious to see how the director would perform in front of the camera.

The film wasn’t without its share of talk and debate. It had to be postponed from its earlier slot to avoid clashing with Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, and some critics felt the emotional depth didn’t always match the visual style. Still, most reviews praised Arun Matheswaran’s bold direction, Lokesh’s screen presence, Wamiqa Gabbi’s fiery performance, and Anirudh’s powerful 15-track album that elevated almost every scene. Several critics gave it 3.5 to 5 stars, calling it a bloody, beautiful and bold reimagining of the classic Devdas story.

Plot

DC follows Devadas “Das”, played by Lokesh Kanagaraj, an outlaw who leads a small gang and delivers justice to those the system has failed. His life changes when he falls for Parvathy, a bar singer, but she is killed during a police raid after the lodge owner betrays him. Heartbroken and furious, Das goes on a rampage. He storms a brothel, kills the man responsible, and rescues Chandra, a sex worker who has suffered abuse for years. Then she joins his gang and in no time at all she’s his Bonnie, his Clyde.

Das and Chandra stand up to corrupt cops and men-of-power who believe that they are beyond the reach of the law. However, when the policemen start to chase them, Das surrenders to save an innocent family who had taken shelter with him. He’s broken from torture in custody — until Chandra makes a daring escape from the prison. There is a traitor among them, which results in more bloodshed, and the gang is down to four members – Das, Chandra and Kitty, their loyal friend. The film ends on a raw, emotional note that stays true to Arun Matheswaran’s signature style — violent, poetic, and unapologetically bold.
